Ferndale man's remains to be returned to family 37 years after he was shot down in Vietnam

More than one year after his helicopter was shot down in Vietnam, a funeral was held for Ferndale's Sgt. Timothy John Jacobsen in 1972.

His family sat in the Ferndale cemetery as 21 gunshots were fired, a flag was presented to Jacobsen's mother and an empty casket was lowered into Jacobsen's grave. But, there was a twinge of hope with the grief -- the family didn't believe Jacobsen was dead as his body hadn't been found.

”When you're hanging onto hope, you'll cling onto anything,” Jacobsen's sister Cindy McWhorter said. “Our whole family was very hopeful, and that went on for years and years.”

TRIP REPORT TO THE UKRAINE

MARCH 5-12, 2008
The team, Vice President Jack Devine, POW Chair Gary Jones, and Communications Director Mokie Porter, arrived in Kiev, Ukraine, on March 6, 2008, after a ten-month delay due to political unrest in the Ukraine. Jim Connell, senior analyst for DPMO and an old friend of the team, accompanied us.

Our Ukrainian friends had become concerned that we had not visited them last year as expected. We explained the delay and assured them that VVA had indeed not forgotten or lost interest in them. Our welcome throughout the trip was warm and sincere.

Army Seeks DNA Samples from Families of MIA Soldiers

WASHINGTON, March 19, 2008 – More than 6,300 families need to be located to collect DNA samples for the purpose of identifying missing soldiers from World War II and the wars in Korea and Vietnam, a U.S. Army official said yesterday.
